People with elbow arthritis usually feel pain when bending their elbow, which, unfortunately, is something people must do many times a day to complete even the simplest tasks. The most serious cases of this condition always produce pain, regardless of whether the elbow is bent or straight. This article explores the main causes that lead to elbow arthritis.

Elbow arthritis causes

Elbow arthritis can develop due to three primary conditions: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and injury.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease affecting the cartilage between the bone and the joint. Healthy cartilage allows people to move their joints smoothly and without pain. When the cartilage starts to deteriorate, it causes the bones to rub against themselves, producing discomfort.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a long-term disease that gradually weakens the joint lining causing it to swell and narrow the joint space. This autoimmune disease may affect not only the elbow but also the wrists, knees, and shoulders. Eventually, the ailment will weaken the bones and soft tissue, which is mainly the cause of permanent pain.

Trauma

Elbow arthritis mainly arises from the deterioration of the joint and cartilage. This could be a result of disease or trauma that damaged the elbow. When it results from an injury, the soft tissue in the joints gets damaged, and it can gradually progress to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

What are elbow arthritis symptoms?

People with any pain or discomfort when bending or stretching their arms should consult a doctor who can confirm the diagnosis. The main symptoms include the following:

  • Stiffness: This is a normal symptom in people with trauma that injures their arms. It’s not unusual to notice that your movement isn’t as smooth as it should be.

  • Locking: The locking in place of the arm is normal among people with osteoarthritis. Bending the elbow may not cause pain. However, it locks or catches when the person tries to stretch it.

  • Pain: The pain will increase gradually as the condition progresses. At first, people may feel mild pain for short periods and only when doing certain movements. Eventually, the pain will increase into a more advanced stage that doesn’t stop even at night.

  • Swelling: This is a common symptom in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. This arises from an accumulation of synovial fluid that thickens, producing joint pain and stiffness.

  • Lack of movement: People having trouble fully bending or extending their arms may indicate a worsening condition.
